Parking in Basel: car parks, prices, the blue zone and the costly mistakes
Verified parking rates in Basel, car park by car park and dated, the blue-zone rules with their lunchtime exception, and the moments when a parking ticket gets expensive: a lost ticket, the Saturday rate during fairs, half hours started.

Basel is predictable for drivers once you keep three systems apart: the cantonal car parks with a single tariff, the private car parks with their own prices, and the street with its blue and white zones. This page puts the verified figures side by side, each with its year and source.
How many spaces are free right now is shown on our page Basel parking live. This one covers what matters before you set off: what it costs, where to park and how to avoid fines.
Each pin is a car park named in OpenStreetMap. Tap it, then Go: the route opens in driving mode.
Which car parks belong to the canton?
Six car parks belong to the Canton of Basel-Stadt: City, Steinen, Elisabethen, Storchen, ELYS and St. Jakob. According to the canton, all six are open around the clock, 365 days a year.
Open around the clock does not mean every lift, pay machine and pedestrian exit works at night. There is no central register of technical closures, so if you are coming back late, check the car park's own page.
The cantonal base tariff
| Time band | Price | Year |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Saturday, midnight to 8am | 1 CHF an hour | 2026 |
| Monday to Saturday, 8am to 7pm | 3 CHF an hour | 2026 |
| Monday to Saturday, 7pm to midnight | 2 CHF an hour | 2026 |
| Sunday that is not a public holiday, all day | 1 CHF an hour | 2026 |
| 24-hour flat rate | 25 CHF | 2026 |
| 30-day card | 215 CHF | 2026 |
| Long-term rental, one year minimum | 195 CHF a month | 2026 |
The tariff explicitly refers to Sundays that are not public holidays. A weekday holiday, or a Sunday that is also a holiday, may therefore be charged differently: the rule of thumb "Sunday is always one franc" is wrong.
Where is parking cheapest in Basel?
Among the car parks that publish their tariff, the ELYS comes out on top. According to its August 2026 tariff, an hour costs 2 CHF from 8am to 8pm and 1 CHF from 8pm to 8am, charged in 30-minute steps.
| ELYS car park | Price |
|---|---|
| Day, 8am to 8pm | 2 CHF an hour |
| Night, 8pm to 8am | 1 CHF an hour |
| 24-hour flat rate | 20 CHF |
| 30-day card | 162 CHF |
| 60-day card | 324 CHF |
| Annual card | 1.800 CHF |
The tariff does not say whether the day rate covers several entries and exits within 24 hours. Ask at the pay desk before you drive out for an evening in town.
For the Rebgasse car park in Kleinbasel there is only a secondary source from 2026: 3.50 CHF for the first hour on weekdays, then 3 CHF per hour started, 4 CHF on Saturdays and 1 CHF at night and on Sundays.
The same source also mentions 2 francs per 30 minutes, which does not match the hourly scale. Check the amount at the machine.
If you are staying overnight: a hotel with its own garage saves you the walk back to the car park, but often charges its own daily rate. The hotels in Basel with prices and cancellation terms show the total price, and the visitor tax gets you the BaselCard for trams and buses.

Parking in the blue zone is free but time-limited: One free hour plus the half hour started. The rule applies Monday to Saturday between 8am and 7pm, and the parking disc must be clearly visible behind the windscreen.
The city makes an exception at lunchtime. If you park between 11:30am and 1:29pm, you may stay until 2:30pm. It is an extended lunch break, not a free day.
White-zone spaces follow the signs on site: duration and price are shown on the meter. How public holidays such as 1 August, 1 November or Christmas are treated in the blue zone is not summarised on the canton's website. The sign is what counts.
What does a day with the visitor parking card cost?
Basel's public transport operator BVB sells a visitor parking card for 12 CHF for half a day and 20 CHF for a full day. The time slots are fixed: 8am to 1pm or noon to 7pm for half a day, 8am to 7pm for the full day.
The card is not a master key for every space in the city. The zones and conditions where it applies are on the BVB website, and that is exactly what to read before you buy.
Where does parking in Basel get expensive?
- The lost ticket: at the Kunstmuseum car park it costs 50 CHF. At the ELYS, without a ticket you pay a flat 30 CHF per day, and the tariff also lists 90 CHF for special handling. Photograph your ticket as you drive in.
- The Saturday rate on fair days: according to the secondary source, the Rebgasse car park also applies its Saturday rate during Art Basel, some other fairs, on 1 November and on Sunday shopping days.
- The half hour started: several car parks charge in 30-minute steps. Stay 31 minutes and you pay for two units.
- Forgetting the disc: a free blue-zone space is only free if your arrival time is set correctly. Our sources give no list of fines for Basel, so we will not invent one.
- The closed motorway exit: the Basel Wettsteinallee exit is closed until the end of 2026. For Kleinbasel and the Messe, use the Hochbergerstrasse exit on the A2 or Riehenring on the A3.
Be wary too of middlemen offering a guaranteed space for cash without a receipt during fairs. No Basel scam is documented in our sources, but only pay at the machine or in the official app.
One last tip for the Old Town: for the final stretch, follow the car park signs rather than your satnav. The lanes around the Minster and Spalenberg are narrow, cobbled and partly closed to traffic.
Which motorway exit leads to which car park?
The guidance system divides the centre into three groups, and your choice of exit decides which one you end up in. For the Messe and Kleinbasel, that is the Centre North group: Messe, Europe, Clarahuus, Claramatte, Rebgasse and Badischer Bahnhof. Museum Tinguely recommends the Hochbergerstrasse exit on the A2 and Riehenring on the A3.
The Wettsteinallee exit, normally the direct route into Kleinbasel, stays closed until the end of 2026. If you rely on an older satnav you will be diverted there and lose time, especially on fair days.
For the Old Town in Grossbasel (Centre West group: Elisabethen, Steinen, City and Storchen) and for SBB station (Centre South group), follow the guidance signs from the city limits. They show the free spaces per car park and lead you around the pedestrian zone.
What applies on Sundays and public holidays?
Sunday is not equally cheap everywhere in Basel. The cantonal tariff grants 1 CHF an hour explicitly on Sundays that are not public holidays, and sets no separate rule for weekday holidays.
The Kunstmuseum car park treats Sundays and public holidays together: 2 CHF an hour during the day, 1 CHF at night. According to the secondary source, the Rebgasse car park charges its Saturday rate of 4 CHF on 1 November and on Sunday shopping days.
Nobody publishes a single list of Basel's public holidays with the parking rates that apply. On a holiday, the board at the car park entrance counts, not your memory of last Sunday.
How do you pay in the car parks?
For the Kunstmuseum car park the operator gives a long list: Swiss franc coins and notes, credit cards, Maestro, Postcard, SwissPass, Parkingpay and TWINT. For the other car parks, payment methods are not published consistently.
No source confirms that every foreign card, Apple Pay or Google Pay works at every machine. An international credit card plus some cash in francs is the combination that never leaves you stuck at the barrier.
What budget is realistic?
| Situation | Verified range |
|---|---|
| Short stop in the blue zone | free, up to one and a half hours with a disc |
| Two hours during the day in a cantonal car park | about 6 CHF |
| An evening from 7pm to 11pm in a cantonal car park | about 8 CHF |
| 24 hours at the ELYS | 20 CHF |
| 24 hours at the cantonal base rate | 25 CHF |
| 24 hours at the Kunstmuseum car park | no more than 30 CHF |
These examples are based on the cantonal tariff and do not round up to the half hour. No new rates have been published for 2027 yet, so the 2026 figures are a planning basis, not a promise.
How do visitors from abroad pay?
The city recommends the free ParkSmart Basel app for finding and paying for a space. Whether it works with a foreign phone number and card is not published: install it at home, create the account and register your number plate before you travel.
Only pay at a machine bearing the car park's identifier, in the official app or on the website shown on the sign. Better not to scan a QR code stuck onto a parking meter.
What rights do disabled drivers have?
Reserved spaces exist in the car parks and at many places on public ground. With a disabled parking card, parking in these spaces on public ground is free and without a time limit.
Space widths, the distance to the lift and accessible toilets are not published car park by car park. A reserved space does not guarantee a step-free route outside, so a call ahead saves detours.
When is a car the wrong choice?
Stay several days and the BaselCard from your accommodation gives you free trams and buses, while the car costs money in the garage. For day visitors from the region, park and ride is the cheaper option; the sites are listed in park and ride in Basel.
That applies even more during fairs, the Herbstmesse and Fasnacht, when the Old Town is practically closed to cars. How to get around Basel without one is explained in getting around Basel, and the map of Basel shows where the districts are.
Into town without a car: stay centrally and leave the car on the edge of town, or at home. The three-star places to stay in Basel are often close to the tram hubs at SBB station and Claraplatz, and the tram is included with the BaselCard.
