Messe Basel: Basel's trade fairs, getting there and hotels during fair weeks

Messe Basel on Messeplatz in Kleinbasel is not one event but a venue where each fair has its own organiser, tickets and opening hours. For visitors, one question therefore matters most: which weeks fill the city so much that rooms become scarce and expensive?

This page lists the fairs and congresses announced for 2027, separates confirmed dates from those only reported, and explains access, parking and hotel planning. The information is as of 22 October 2026.

Which fairs take place in Basel in 2027?

On 22 October 2026, Messe Basel's official list confirmed health.tech, DIA Europe, Basilia, SGAIM, Fierce Pharma Week, Ilmac and Igeho. Blickfang and Fantasy Basel so far only appear in a secondary trade-fair calendar.

Art Basel was still missing from Messe Basel's list at that point, although the fair itself has confirmed its dates. One calendar also lists an erotic fair in December without a date, which we leave out until it is confirmed.

A correction to the sources: one calendar places Fantasy Basel on the Ascension weekend. Easter falls on 28 March 2027, Ascension on 6 May and Whitsun on 16 May, so 15 to 17 May 2027 is the Whitsun weekend.

Which fairs push up hotel prices?

Four periods matter more than any others when booking a room. They affect not only visitors but also exhibitors, technicians, press and service providers, who often book months in advance.

  • Art Basel in June: the week when late bookings cost the most, with preview days from 15 June 2027.
  • Fantasy Basel in May: by its own account the biggest pop-culture convention in Switzerland, on a long weekend.
  • Igeho in November: five days of international trade fair for hotels and restaurants.
  • Ilmac in September: the chemistry and pharma trade fair, in a city that lives off that industry.

No source documents how much prices rise in 2027 with a dated price series, so we do not write that "hotels double". For Art Basel, an industry source cites June mark-ups, which we set out with their limits in Art Basel hotels: prices and booking deadlines.

Art Basel from 17 June 2027 to 20 June 2027: for this week, when you book decides the price. The mid-range hotels in Basel for Art Basel can be filtered by district and cancellation terms; a free-cancellation booking made now is safer than a cheap one without cancellation.

How do you get to Messeplatz?

By tram, without exception the simplest solution. According to OpenStreetMap, lines 1, 2, 6, 14, 15, 16 and 21 stop at Messeplatz, and lines 8 and 17 at Claraplatz, about five minutes' walk from the grounds.

  • From SBB station: tram 2 to Messeplatz, a seven-minute ride according to the timetable.
  • From Badischer Bahnhof: a few minutes on foot or one stop on tram 2 or 6.
  • From EuroAirport: bus 50 to SBB station, then the tram; the route is explained in EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg.
  • From the Old Town: 20 minutes on foot from Barfüsserplatz across the Mittlere Brücke, or seven to eight minutes on tram 6, 14 or 16.

Each organiser decides whether its ticket includes local transport. If you stay overnight in Basel, the guest card from your accommodation gives you free trams, as explained in detail in BaselCard and Mobility Ticket.

Where do you park on fair days?

The Messe car park is right next to the grounds. According to its page on the guidance system, an hour costs CHF 3 during the day from 8am to 7pm, and the 24-hour flat rate is CHF 50. It is not one of the six cantonal car parks whose rates we break down in parking in Basel.

The guidance system shows how many spaces are free: currently 776 in the Messe car park. On big fair days, Messe, Europe and Clarahuus fill up first; the live display for all car parks is on Basel parking live.

The Hochbergerstrasse exit on the A2 and Riehenring on the A3 are the quickest way into the area. If you want to park on the edge of town, the options are in park and ride in Basel, bearing in mind that parking, tram and admission are paid separately.

How do you plan a day at a fair?

  • Not on the stroke of opening: security checks, cloakrooms and queues take time on big days, even with an online ticket.
  • The right entrance: check whether the event is at Messe Basel or at the Congress Center.
  • Eat earlier or later: the restaurants on Messeplatz are full at midday and when the halls close, and Kleinbasel is a few minutes away.
  • Two ways to pay: which cards stands accept is not published consistently. Carry an international card and a backup, and pay in francs.

Each fair's terms say whether the ticket includes trams and buses or only admission. For Art Basel it is the latter, as our page on Art Basel explains.

What applies if you arrive by car?

If you use Swiss motorways you need a vignette, a separate cost from parking and often confused with it. Our sources give no verified amount for 2027.

Tram lanes are not traffic lanes, and a foreign parking disc does not automatically allow you to park in Basel. The fines around Messeplatz are not published in the sources, and a hotel room does not guarantee a parking space.

What do tickets cost?

There is no single Messe Basel price. Each fair sells its own tickets, and most 2027 prices had not been published by October 2026.

  • Art Basel: 2027 prices not yet known. In 2026 a day ticket cost 70 CHF; all categories are in Art Basel tickets.
  • Fantasy Basel: the date is known, but there is no verifiable price list.
  • Ilmac and Igeho: trade fairs, often with registration or a visitor ticket; prices and free access for 2027 not published.
  • Congresses: prices depend on the organiser, participant category and registration date.

Download your ticket before you travel, keep a screenshot and save the purchase confirmation. Some ticketing apps require a Swiss phone number or a card with 3-D Secure; we found no source saying a particular app is unusable for foreigners.

Where should you stay for a fair?

Near Messeplatz you stay in Clara, Rosental and Kleinbasel, three to ten minutes' walk from the entrance. During fair weeks the area is noisy, with deliveries, taxis and crowds until late; outside them it is a fairly quiet business district.

The Old Town is less convenient for the Messe than the word "central" suggests. SBB station is well connected by trams 1 and 2 and often less in demand on fair days; all districts are compared in where to stay in Basel.

What comes on top of the room price quickly adds up in fair weeks: breakfast, parking, the visitor tax of 4.20 CHF per person per night in Basel-Stadt, and minimum stays. Always compare offers with the same cancellation terms.

Where do you eat around the Messe?

On Messeplatz itself the options are convenient but overrun at midday and when the halls close. During Art Basel, nearby restaurants often work with bookings, special menus or long waits.

Rosental mainly offers quick food between offices and hotels. Kleinbasel by the Rhine is livelier, but it too is full during fair weeks and not automatically cheap; an overview of Basel's food scene is in eating in Basel.

Basilia in April: the jewellery and watch fair from 8 April 2027 to 11 April 2027 fills hotels less than the big summer art fair, but noticeably. The mid-range hotels in Basel for Basilia are still widely available, and Clara and Kleinbasel are within walking distance of the halls.

When should you book for a fair week?

As early as possible, and on a cancellable rate. The dates of the big fairs are fixed a year ahead, ticket prices often only weeks before: if you wait for ticket sales to open before booking your room, you book too late.

If you want to know the real mark-up of a fair week, you have to measure it yourself. Compare the same hotel in the same category for the fair week and for a week without a fair, six months, three months and two weeks ahead, always with the same cancellation terms.

  • Non-refundable rates: common in fair weeks, and lost if the organiser changes the dates.
  • Minimum stays: some hotels only sell three or four consecutive nights during fair week.
  • Breakfast and parking: often not included in the price shown.
  • The neighbours: Saint-Louis and Weil am Rhein are close, but come without a Basel guest card and need a cross-border ticket.

How accessible are the exhibition grounds?

A modern venue is no guarantee. The sources publish no overview of disabled parking, routes from the car park, lifts, toilets in each hall or wheelchair hire.

Ask the organiser of each fair about the recommended entrance, accreditation for a companion and whether a wheelchair is available. During set-up and dismantling, temporary ramps or cables can change the routes.

What might disappoint?

  • A date is not a ticket: many fairs announce their dates, but their opening hours and prices only weeks beforehand.
  • Messe is not the Congress Center: calendars mix the two venues, so check the entrance.
  • The car: with a full car park and heavy traffic, you lose more time than you save.
  • Queues despite an online ticket: at the entrance, the cloakroom and the restaurants.
  • Paying in euros: conversion at the terminal often costs more than paying in francs, as how expensive is Basel? shows.

Messe Basel is a place of work, and the rest of the city is a tram ride away. Between two fair days there is often an evening free for the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Old Town or a trip into the surroundings, as day trips from Basel shows.
