Our verdict

The Oetlinger Buvette is a container with a terrace on the Kleinbasel riverbank, and in summer one of the loveliest spots in the city. A garden grows on the roof, and in front of it flows the Rhine, where swimmers drift past.

Eva Wenger and Simon Baudenbacher run the buvette, and the canton renewed their concession in 2022.

In the glass and on the plate

The house drink is the Oeti Spritz, made with orange and thyme, alongside coffee, beer, wine and cocktails. The food is light: soup, antipasti, piadelle, sausages including vegetarian ones, pastries and Gasparini ice cream.

Location

The buvette is on Unterer Rheinweg, an eleven-minute walk along the river from the Mittlere Brücke. It is one of nine waterside buvettes the canton lists in its open data.

Our advice

In rain the buvette stays shut, and it is closed out of season. On hot evenings come early, as every seat by the water is in demand after work.
