Basel Autumn Fair (Herbstmesse): dates, squares, opening hours and tips

The Basel Herbstmesse, the city's autumn fair, runs in 2026 from 24 October 2026 to 8 November 2026, with Petersplatz and its Hääfelimäärt staying open until 10 November 2026. Entry to the squares is free; you pay for rides, food and drink.

In 2026 the canton is celebrating the fair's 555th year, which goes back to an origin in 1471. This page explains the squares and their hours, the best times to go and the gaps in the official information.

When is the 2026 Herbstmesse?

It opens on Saturday 24 October 2026 at noon on Martinskirchplatz. At 11:45am the President of the Government, Conradin Cramer, gives a speech, followed at midday by the traditional ringing-in.

The hours come from the canton's press release of 14 October 2026 and the official visitor website, and the Hallenmesse confirms them separately. One tourist website shows simplified uniform hours that blur the differences between squares, so stick to this table.

When is the 2027 Herbstmesse, and how is the date set?

The official website already lists the 2027 edition: from 23 October 2027 to 7 November 2027. The fair always begins on a Saturday in late October and lasts 16 days on the main squares.

The canton publishes no rule from which the date could be calculated. In 2025 the fair ran from 25 October 2025 to 9 November 2025, with Petersplatz open until 11 November. We did not have complete official dates for 2023 and 2024.

What does each square offer?

  • Messeplatz and Rosentalanlage: the territory of the big rides and the big wheel, open from 11am. This is where it is busiest in the evenings and at weekends, with lots of families.
  • Barfüsserplatz: in the heart of the Old Town, with rides, food stalls and market booths, from noon.
  • Münsterplatz: the most beautiful backdrop, in front of the Minster, more photogenic than spectacular, from noon.
  • Kasernenareal: near the Kaserne and the Rhine in Kleinbasel, with rides, stalls and food.
  • Hallenmesse: the covered section in the exhibition halls, good when it rains.
  • Petersplatz: quieter and geared to shopping, with the Hääfelimäärt, the traditional crockery and household market, open longer than the rest.

The big wheel is usually described as being on Messeplatz. Its height, operator and 2026 price are not published in the sources, so check on site.

Every square is marked on our map of Basel. Between Barfüsserplatz and Messeplatz it is 15 to 25 minutes on foot, or a few tram stops.

For the 2027 Herbstmesse, already: if you want to be there for the opening weekend on 23 October 2027, stay in Kleinbasel, between Messeplatz, the Kaserne and the Rhine. The places to stay in Basel for the opening weekend are set to those dates, and the visitor tax adds the BaselCard for the tram between the squares.

What does a two-hour walk look like?

If you are short of time, start at Petersplatz with the market, walk through the Old Town to Barfüsserplatz and climb from there to Münsterplatz. These three squares in Grossbasel are close together and easy to link on foot.

For the big rides, take the tram across the Rhine to Messeplatz and the Rosentalanlage. The Kasernenareal is on the way, on the Kleinbasel bank, and in the evening that is where you will find the most life, along with Messeplatz.

What is free, and what costs money?

Entry to all the squares is free, with no admission ticket or booking. You pay for each ride, attraction, snack and drink separately.

That is exactly what makes costs hard to plan: for 2026, neither ride prices nor those of the typical fair treats have been published. So we are not copying figures from old blog posts; the prices are shown at every stall.

  • Mässmogge: the fair's traditional sweet, usually sold in bags.
  • Käsküechli: small savoury cheese tartlets as a snack.
  • Basler Läckerli: the spiced honey biscuit with candied fruit, sold at stalls and in shops.

When is it quietest?

Nobody publishes a visitor curve by hour or day. The tips below are based on the opening hours and where the squares are, not on a count.

  • Weekdays between 11am and 2pm: the best time for Petersplatz, the market and photos; Messeplatz opens at 11am.
  • Sunday morning: good for Petersplatz and Messeplatz, as the city-centre squares only open at noon.
  • The final days at Petersplatz: for the market, by which time the rides have already gone.

It is likely to be busiest on Friday and Saturday evenings, when the squares stay open until 11pm, around midday on the opening Saturday and on Sunday afternoons. Fireworks, a family day and a late-night fair are not confirmed with dates for 2026 in our sources.

What is the Hääfelimäärt?

The Hääfelimäärt on Petersplatz is the Herbstmesse's traditional crockery and household market, and the quietest part of the whole event. Under the square's trees you find pots, crockery and household goods instead of rides and loudspeakers.

It stays open two days longer than the other squares, until 10 November 2026 in 2026, daily from 11am to 8pm. If you want to enjoy the fair without the crush, start here on a weekday morning.

How do you visit the Herbstmesse with children?

Messeplatz and the Rosentalanlage open at 11am and have the big rides, Petersplatz is quieter, and Münsterplatz has the finest backdrop. With small children, a weekday morning is the most relaxed time.

Because every ride is paid for separately, it helps to set a fixed amount per child before you set off. We found no confirmed family day with discounts for 2026, so do not trust announcements without an official programme.

How many people visit the Herbstmesse?

The canton estimated the 2025 edition at around 1 million visitors, announced on 8 November 2025, before Petersplatz closed. It is an estimate, not an audited count.

Dividing that figure by 16 days would be misleading, because the squares are not open for the same length of time and crowds vary widely. The number of showmen, the number of rides and the economic impact are not published in the sources.

What makes the Herbstmesse special?

The canton calls it Switzerland's biggest funfair and part of the city's living heritage. What makes it special is less any single ride than the mix: its great age, its spread across several city-centre squares, the market on Petersplatz and the backdrop of Münsterplatz.

It has nothing to do with Art Basel, which takes place in June. If you come in autumn for the museums, the two combine well: the Kunstmuseum is close to Barfüsserplatz.

How do you get to the Herbstmesse?

The tram is best, taking you close to the square you want. We found no diversions, road closures or extra services for 2026 in the sources, so check the journey planner on the day.

A note on the Hallenmesse from the previous year: in 2025 the Hallenmesse and the attractions on Isteinerstrasse closed as early as 2 November because of the IGEHO trade fair, while the other squares stayed open until 9 November. An overall calendar therefore does not guarantee that every part stays open to the end.

By car, the Centre North car park group around Messeplatz is under the most pressure. Free spaces are shown on Basel parking live, and trams and fares are explained in getting around Basel.

Two evenings at the fair: if you are planning the second weekend of the 2027 Herbstmesse, from 29 October 2027, Kleinbasel and the area around SBB station have mid-range hotels with trams to every square. The three-star hotels in Basel are set to those dates. For the day in between there are guided tours and activities in Basel.

Which district suits you best is explained in where to stay in Basel. Other things to do are in things to do in Basel, and if you come back in December, see the dates of the Basel Christmas market.
