Basel Christmas market: Münsterplatz, Barfüsserplatz, dates and tips
The Basel Christmas market is spread across Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz and runs from 26 November to 23 December 2026. Opening hours, the early close on the last day, what is free, the quiet hours, the canton's figures and the gaps in them.

In 2026 the Basel Christmas market runs from Thursday 26 November 2026 to Wednesday 23 December 2026. The two main squares, Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz, are open daily from 11am to 8:30pm, and entry is free.
On the last day, Münsterplatz closes as early as 6pm and Barfüsserplatz at 8pm. This page explains the squares, the best times, what is free and which figures the canton publishes, and which it does not.
When is the 2026 Christmas market open?
| Square | Dates | Daily | 23 December 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Münsterplatz | 26 Nov to 23 Dec | 11am to 8:30pm | closes at 6pm |
| Barfüsserplatz | 26 Nov to 23 Dec | 11am to 8:30pm | closes at 8pm |
| Claraplatz, according to tourist calendars | 26 Nov to 23 Dec | 11am to 8:30pm | closes at 8pm |
The dates come from the canton's website, updated on 8 October 2026. The canton's English page still gives "23.12.2025" for the early close on Münsterplatz, a typo that the other versions do not have.
Claraplatz in Kleinbasel appears in some tourist calendars as a third location, but the canton's pages mainly highlight the two squares in Grossbasel. If you only have one evening, plan around Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz.
What was it like in previous years?
In 2025 the market ran from 27 November 2025 to 23 December, also from 11am to 8:30pm. The pattern is clear: it starts on the Thursday before the first Sunday of Advent and ends on 23 December, just under four weeks.
We did not find the complete hours for 2023 and 2024 in the sources, so we do not claim they were exactly the same.
Münsterplatz or Barfüsserplatz?
Münsterplatz is the more beautiful spot: the stalls stand between the trees in front of the Minster, with a large decorated Christmas tree. According to the canton, this market has existed since 2011.
- for the backdrop of the Minster and the square,
- for photos of the tree and the church,
- for crafts and gifts,
- for the fairy-tale forest (Märchenwald), when it is open.
Barfüsserplatz, around the Barfüsserkirche, is the square for food, drinks and market booths. The walk between the two is short: with two to three hours, start at Barfüsserplatz, climb up to Münsterplatz and then carry on through the illuminated lanes.
For the fairy-tale forest, a secondary source dated 18 October 2026 gives opening from 26 November to 22 December, Monday to Friday from 1:30pm to 7pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 7pm. That is not on the canton's main page, so check on site.
For an Advent weekend in December: stay between Münsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz and you can walk back in the evening, with no tram and no crowds. The places to stay in Basel for a weekend in December are set to those dates, and Fridays and Saturdays go first. The visitor tax adds the BaselCard.

Entry to both markets, the walk between them, the Christmas lights in the centre, the tree and the decorations are free. Street entertainment not signposted as paid is included too.
You pay for drinks, food, crafts, regional products, the carousel and any workshops. The canton publishes no price list for 2026: what mulled wine, raclette or a sausage costs is shown at the stall, as is the deposit on mugs.
For payment, a card or phone works, with a little cash in francs as a backup. Some stalls are quicker with cash or have a minimum amount.
Which specialities can you find?
Expect what Swiss and German Christmas markets offer: hot drinks, gingerbread, pastries, cheese, simple dishes and crafts. There is no complete list of 2026 stallholders.
Basler Läckerli, the city's spiced biscuit, is best bought from a specialist shop or a well-known brand. Mässmogge belong to the Herbstmesse and are not guaranteed at the Christmas market.
When is it least crowded?
The canton publishes no count by hour or day. The tips below are practical advice, not statistics.
- Weekdays between 11am and 2pm: the best compromise for browsing the stalls in peace.
- Weekdays at opening, 11am to 1pm: for photos of Münsterplatz with few people.
- Arrive on a weekday before 5pm: for the evening lights, starting at Barfüsserplatz and walking up to the Minster.
- Avoid: Saturday afternoon and evening, Sunday afternoon and Friday after 5pm.
23 December is not a day for a full visit, with closing at 6pm and 8pm. It is fine for last-minute shopping.
Can you climb the Minster towers during Advent?
Yes, and it is the finest view of the market. During Advent, from 1 to 23 December, the Minster offers an evening tower climb on weekdays from 4pm to 6pm.
For 2026, an event listing also mentions a date on 30 November from 4pm to 5:30pm, for 6 CHF, free for children under 14. The staircase is narrow, with no lift, and each tower has around 250 steps.
How do you combine the market with the rest of the city?
The classic route: start at Barfüsserplatz in the early evening, climb up to Münsterplatz, look out over the Rhine from the Pfalz and walk back through the illuminated lanes. The Kunstmuseum is close to Barfüsserplatz and open until 8pm on Wednesdays.
With two days, put the market in the evening and the museums in the daytime, the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen included. The sights and how long each takes are in things to see in Basel.

Can you get around with a pushchair or wheelchair?
Both squares are cobbled, and the way from Barfüsserplatz to Münsterplatz climbs. At peak times in the evening and at weekends, getting between the stalls is a struggle.
A weekday morning is the best time for pushchairs and wheelchairs, with space between the booths and no queues. Accessible toilets near the market are not listed in the sources.
What does the market bring the city?
| Indicator | Value | Year | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spending directly at the market | CHF 50 million | 2024 | BAK Economics study with the Statistical Office |
| Additional spending in retail, hotels, restaurants and culture | CHF 54 million | 2024 | same study |
| Stalls, food and entertainment offers | 148 | 2025 | Canton of Basel-Stadt |
| of which new | 12 | 2025 | Canton of Basel-Stadt |
Added together, the two spending items come to 104 million francs for 2024. That is our own addition, not an official figure under that name.
The figure everyone asks for is missing: the number of visitors. Neither the canton nor the tourist office publishes a total, a daily figure or a hotel occupancy rate linked to the market, for 2026 or for previous years.
Is Basel worth it compared with Colmar or Freiburg?
Basel scores with two squares in a historic Old Town, a Swiss touch and the museums next door. On the other hand, prices are Swiss, and figures on crowds and prices are missing.
Colmar has a very photogenic old town with several markets, but often overcrowded lanes and scarce hotels. Freiburg im Breisgau offers a compact centre with a German atmosphere. The sources do not allow a numerical comparison of the markets.
And if you are after art in December: Art Basel takes place in Basel in June, while December brings the Miami Beach edition, in 2026 from 4 December 2026 to 6 December 2026. In Basel, the museums remain, above all the Kunstmuseum and the Fondation Beyeler.
Where should you stay for the Christmas market?
For Fridays and Saturdays in December it pays to book weeks or even months in advance, although there are no occupancy figures. If you stay near the tram lines rather than in the Old Town, finding a room is easier.
Saint-Louis and the neighbouring French towns, Weil am Rhein and Lörrach are often cheaper, but less flexible in the evening when connections thin out. Factor in travel time, the last connection and parking costs.
The second Advent weekend in early December: mid-range hotels near SBB station and in Kleinbasel are one tram ride from Barfüsserplatz, an alternative when the Old Town is fully booked. The three-star hotels in Basel are set to early December. For the daytime there are guided tours and activities in Basel.

If you come by car, check Basel parking live first, as the Old Town car parks are in demand on Advent Saturdays.
For the days around it, plans with the Kunstmuseum and the other museums are in things to do in Basel, and the map of Basel shows where the squares are. In the autumn before, the Basel Herbstmesse uses some of the same squares.
