Art Basel in Basel: dates, tickets, sectors and how to visit the fair

Art Basel 2027 takes place from Thursday 17 June 2027 to Sunday 20 June 2027 at Messe Basel. It is preceded by the preview days on 15 June 2027 and 16 June 2027, by invitation or VIP card only.

As of today, Art Basel has confirmed the dates but not the opening hours, ticket prices or number of galleries for 2027. This page separates what is fixed from what can be inferred from 2026, and explains how to visit the fair well.

What is confirmed for Art Basel 2027?

Opening hours 2027not yet published

The pattern is the same as in previous years: two preview days, then four public days from Thursday to Sunday in mid-June. The editions ran from 15 to 18 June in 2023, 13 to 16 June in 2024, 19 to 22 June in 2025 and 18 June 2026 to 21 June 2026 in 2026.

One source already gives 11am to 7pm for 2027, a commercial directory 9am to 6pm. Both remain unconfirmed until Art Basel publishes its hours.

How did Art Basel 2026 go?

In 2026, 290 galleries from 43 countries and territories showed their works, and Art Basel counted 90,000 visitors over the preview and public days. There were 88,000 in 2025 and around 82,000 in 2023.

The fair was open on all public days from 11am to 7pm, with VIP guests admitted an hour earlier, from 10am. On Thursday evening, Unlimited Night extended access to Unlimited until 10pm.

Art Basel publishes no figure for its economic impact on Basel, hotels, restaurants or tax revenue. It cannot be derived from the visitor numbers.

What did tickets cost in 2026?

Ticket 2026Price
Adult day ticket70 CHF
After Work, Friday 4pm to 7pm45 CHF
Weekend, Saturday and Sunday125 CHF
Reduced, for students, seniors and certain residents59 CHF
Unlimited Night, Thursday 7pm to 10pm40 CHF
Children up to 12 with a parentfree

For the day ticket, two sources give different prices: 70 francs from Basel Life and 69 from Travel.art. The difference is not explained anywhere, and we go with the 70 francs given by two sources.

In 2026 tickets were sold in the official online shop and on site at Messeplatz. VIP cards are not tickets you can buy: they are personalised and issued by Art Basel or the galleries. For 2027, prices and the start of sales are still open, so only buy through the official channel, as resellers charge mark-ups.

What are the sectors?

  • Galleries: the stands of international galleries, with historic and contemporary works, the heart of the fair.
  • Unlimited: large-scale installations that do not fit on any stand. In 2026, Ruba Katrib of MoMA PS1 curated the sector for the first time, with 59 projects.
  • Parcours: works in public space and at historic sites around the city, in 2026 under Stefanie Hessler of the Swiss Institute in New York, with 21 projects from 31 galleries.
  • Messeplatz: a public art project in front of the exhibition building.
  • Talks, tours, special events: a changing programme, partly reserved for ticket holders or guests.

The Parcours works in public space are free to see, but the official guided tour cost 25 CHF in 2026, daily at 3pm. "Parcours is free" does not mean everything around it is.

When is it least crowded?

Art Basel publishes no visitor count by day or hour, only the total. The assessment below is ours, not a measurement.

TimeCrowdsFor whom
Thursday 11am to 1pmhighFirst public day, many collectors
Thursday 7pm to 10pm, Unlimited Nightvery highFor the atmosphere and performances, not for moving quickly
Friday 11am to 4pmhighA good compromise for the galleries
Friday 4pm to 7pmvariableAfter Work ticket, cheaper
Saturday 11am to 4pmvery highAvoid if you want peace and quiet
Sunday morningmedium to highOften the best choice for a planned visit
Sunday after 4pmvariableSome works are sold or taken down

For a thorough visit we recommend Friday morning or Sunday morning. Allow at least four hours, as two are only enough for an impression, and Unlimited alone takes time.

Book early for Art Basel in June: during fair week the hotels near Messeplatz go first, and hotel guides speak of three to four months' lead time for the centre and Kleinbasel. The places to stay in Basel for the fair dates are set to those days; book a cancellable rate and compare later. For the city beyond the fair there are guided tours and activities in Basel.

How did Art Basel begin?

Art Basel was founded in Basel in 1970 on the initiative of the Swiss gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt. The fair built its reputation on an international selection of galleries, museum-quality works and the proximity of Basel's institutions.

The Basel edition is still the most historic and institutional of the brand, alongside Miami Beach, Paris, Hong Kong and Doha. It stands out for the density of its galleries, the strong weight of modern and post-war art alongside the contemporary, the Unlimited sector, Parcours in the city and the museums all around.

The name Beyeler is no coincidence: the same gallerist later founded the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, which shows Louise Bourgeois from 13 June 2027, a few days before the fair.

Which fairs run at the same time?

Other fairs take place in the same week and fill hotels and evenings: Liste, focused on younger galleries, Volta in the independent contemporary segment and Design Miami/Basel for historic and contemporary design. Their 2027 dates and prices were not reliably confirmed in our sources.

"During Art Basel week" is not enough as a date, as some start before the public days and others have their own previews. Check each fair's calendar before planning your evenings.

Which museums are worth it during fair week?

Many visitors combine the fair with the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Fondation Beyeler, Museum Tinguely and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. The museums are not automatically free that week.

In 2026 some of the fair's VIP passes gave free entry to the Kunstmuseum, while the general public paid the normal price. For 2027, special hours and that week's exhibitions are not yet fully known; all the sights are listed in things to see in Basel.

How do you get to the fair?

Tram lines 1, 2, 6, 14, 15, 16 and 21 stop at Messeplatz, and lines 8 and 17 at Claraplatz, about five minutes' walk away. From SBB station, tram 2 reaches Messeplatz in seven minutes according to the timetable, not counting waiting time or crowds.

Liste is held in the same exhibition complex as the Art Basel halls. If you do not have to, do not come by car: the Messeplatz car parks are under pressure that week; see Basel parking live. Trams and fares are explained in getting around Basel.

If you are flying in, the way from EuroAirport and from the station is in Basel's stations.

What applies to children and visitors with disabilities?

In 2026, children up to 12 got into the fair free with a parent, while another source gave 16 at the time. The 2027 conditions have not been published yet, so with children check the official ticket page before buying.

Basel's trams are largely low-floor, and wheelchair users are best advised to check access to the halls with Art Basel before visiting. In the crowds at Messeplatz, though, you may need to let a tram go by with a wheelchair or pushchair.

How do you get a VIP card?

Not by buying one: the VIP cards for the preview are personalised and issued by Art Basel or the exhibiting galleries to collectors, curators and guests. If you know a gallery, ask there.

Treat online offers selling VIP access to Art Basel with caution, since the cards are issued in the holder's name. For the public days, a normal ticket from the official shop is enough.

What might disappoint?

  • The fair is huge, loud and dense; one day does not guarantee a relaxed visit.
  • The most sought-after works sell quickly or are no longer displayed the same way.
  • Unlimited is impressive but demands time and slow walking.
  • Parcours is spread around the city and means more walking than a gallery tour.
  • The ticket does not automatically include guided tours, special events or VIP access.

If you want to buy works, come to the preview. If you want to look, choose a quiet morning and treat Unlimited as a separate item on your programme.

Art Basel with a group or family: during fair week a flat gives you more space than a double room, but often requires minimum nights and full prepayment. The holiday flats in Basel for the June fair dates are set to those days; check the cancellation terms and the final price including cleaning.

Prices, deadlines and fallback options for accommodation are explained in Art Basel hotels: prices, booking deadlines and alternatives. For the district, see where to stay in Basel, and for the days after, things to do in Basel.
